WDW Trip Report 2015: Tuesday: The One Where We Have Rumblies In Our Tumblies, and Delicious Hallowishes Pt. I

Tuesday: The One Where We Have Rumblies In Our Tumblies, and Delicious Hallowishes Pt. I

Are you ready for the pictures? I hope you’re ready for the pictures.

Our first full Disney day! Fortunately...I was feeling much better! :Pinkbounc I’ve never been more relieved! I thought it was maybe a migraine (I rarely get them, but when I do I’m usually sick). I took it sooooo sloooowwwwwly getting ready that morning, so as not to set myself off again, which seemed to do the trick. Soon we were both ready to start our trip for real! There is only one place, to us, to start a trip to Walt Disney World. The heartbeat of a holiday. The main (st) House of Mouse. We were headed for MAGIC KINGDOM!!!

Magic Kingdom is my very favourite park. When I would watch the planning videos as a child (that I would call the hotline and order when my parents weren’t in the room, either that or beg them to call for me, even though they told me a million times that we couldn’t go, because I just wanted to watch the video), everything that I added to my little kid bucket list was in Magic Kingdom. On our last trip we spent two full days there before John reminded me “There are three other parks, you know…”, I was in my element! I was so excited to be going back to my favourite place to attack our latest bucket list (which I just realised, I never shared with you all...Hmmm...Seperate post, I think!).

It was no cooler than the night before (shock, horror) so I was slathered in sun lotion. I HATE sun lotion. If Ambre Solaire shares skyrocketed the first two weeks in October, they have me to thank. Ugh. I did take an appropriately named solution to the sticky skin feeling that I hate though: Lush Fairy Dust dusting powder! As I learned in MCO, you can buy this in America too. It smells like cotton candy and sugary treats, and it contains a healthy dose of lustre dust. This does mean that, if you are as pale as me, you look like some kind of twinkly vampiric extra from Twilight. Unless your in Disney, of course, and then you look like a magical, sparkly fairy being (because, of course, you look wayyy too happy and un-constipated to be in Twilight!). It’s like getting pixie dusted every morning and because you’re sticky, it lasts all day! I am not on commission. It’s just awesome. Anyway...

The bus arrived quickly, we barely had time to check out all the posters in the bus shelter, and soon we were on our way. Our first Disney bus trip! The first time I have been excited to be on public transport since learning to drive over a decade ago! When we walked to OPR the night before I wasn’t really paying attention, and we walked around the lake, so this was my first time really seeing all the other islands of CBR. They were all very pretty, but personally I preferred Jamaica! There’s just something about the blue and yellow and white combo that I love.

When we arrived at MK I was SO excited to see the Mickey pumpkin wreaths on the toll booths. That has been the iconic image of our trip planning for me, I love it. Disney, yet seasonal and oh so cute. I tried to make one as a room decoration, but it went horribly wrong, so it got left at home! One thing I wasn’t expecting on the bus was the “Welcome to MK” fanfare/speech. I nearly cried!

We both had rumblies in our tumblies, so we hurried towards the gates. We actuallly hurried so fast that I didn’t even take a photograph of the MNSSHP sign under the monorail track. When I’m in too much of a hurry to snap pictures, it’s serious. We got through the bag check line, and then went to put our Magic Bands to the ultimate test. They got us into our hotel room, but would they get us into the Kingdom? Or would we join the Blue Light Brigade and have to go and get them fixed? Fortunately they worked first time and we added our fingerprints no problem. Here we go!! I’m sure by now you might have guessed where we were going, but this should give the game away and get you in the mood! I was so happy when they played the instrumental version of it while we were eating!

Yup...We had a breakfast reservation at Crystal Palace! :D

As it was our first experience of the bus system we had set off early for our 10:35am reservation. Fortunately we made it to Magic Kingdom with time to spare, and just in time to see the Trolley Show! I loved their Autumn outfits!

Sorry, that’s a terrible picture. There are better ones later on in the trip, I promise.

There’s my castle! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! I may have shed a happy tear or two. It’s just so beautiful!

I can’t believe how pretty MK looks decked out for Autumn/Halloween.

I loved how it looked when we went last time so I wasn’t sure if the colour change would spoil it, but nope, I loved it!! We dawdled in The Emporium and a couple of other shops, mainly because it was SO hot I didn’t know what to do with myself other than seek out the nearest air-conditioning, spotting the new merchandise along the way, and heading into Arribas Bros. Soon John dragged me away from the shiny things to get to our reservation. I have a real case of the “Oooh, shiny!-s”, as Ariel called them later in our trip (spoiler alert. Oops. Too late) so that was no mean feat. But a breakfast buffet with one of my favourite bears was calling. We checked in and got our pager, and just had time to snap a quick castle shot before our table was ready.

Ahhhhh, stunning.

This was our first time at Crystal Palace, what a beautiful place! When we were shown to our table Tigger was already making his way around our section. Now...I don’t know precisely why I put myself through character dining. At anywhere other than Disney, I have a major fear of fur characters/mascots. I HATE them, even if I know the person in the suit, I’m not happy unless they take the headgear off. I just can’t be around them. In Disney, well, all the characters you meet are the real deal obviously, so my irrational fear does not apply!!! I am always still a little on edge though, especially when multiple characters are milling around near me and I can't see where they are at all times. So character dining was quite the experience!

Our server was lovely, I can't find the bill at the moment and I can’t remember his name, but he was from NY. He was very attentive, keeping our glasses filled and nipping over to tell me where the characters were and who was coming next (I think maybe he heard us discussing me not being keen on not knowing if the characters were sneaking up on me!). He was lovely!

Very excited to get his breakfast at last. This is a man who never eats breakfast at home. Holidays are a different matter, however!

This was my view from the table.

I made my trip to the buffet first.

There was an exclusive Crystal Palace item on our To Eat bucket list: Pooh's Puffed Toast. Let me tell you I was not disappointed! The only thing that made me sad was that I only had room for one plateful (but I was grateful for that plateful...Hum-hum de dum, hum de dum-dum…). John managed a second trip but I was just too full! Though obviously I fulfilled my wifely duty and had a taste of anything that he brought back that I hadn’t already tried! What with being ill the night before (always makes me a bit wary to eat again, “Am I prepared to experience this food in reverse?” kind of thing), and carefully watching what I ate before we left and losing 1/2st, I think my rumbly tumbly had shrunk a bit! This was no good for two weeks on the DDP! Still I really enjoyed what I did eat, it was all delicious. One by one, the characters made their way around to us, by the time we finished eating there was only Piglet keeping us waiting.

As we left I noticed the cute topiaries in the entrance that we’d rushed past on the way in. They are adorable! I had to go around and get a picture of each of them before we went.

And an extra one of Eeyore’s beautifully beribboned butt. :)

This will be the last trip when I book so many (expensive!) ADRs on our first full day. We weren’t ready. I in particular wasn’t ready. Early start, 8+hr flight, restless night’s sleep, 5hr time difference, all within 36hrs. I was desperate to get out there and play and stuff my face with Disney treats, but I don’t think we got full value for money out of either of our ADRs today. I don’t mind, we really enjoyed them and that’s what matters, but next time I would book for later in our trip.

We also had a full complement of FP+s booked, so off we went for the first one...

WDW Trip Report 2015: Monday: The One With All the Flying, Pt. II

Monday: The One With All the Flying, Pt. II
You join us where you left us, trudging from the Fake-o-Rail, looking for the car!

After what felt like hours (probably about 10-15mins) walking around the airport with our cases, we found the Alamo desk and joined yet another queue.

I was NOT impressed with Alamo AT ALL. We will definitely not be using them again. Rewind three years to our last trip, we booked the car that we were recommended, turned up to collect it, and were told that it was only suitable for hand luggage and we needed to upgrade. Fortunately that day we got a healthy dose of pixie dust and the upgrade was free. When we went to book this trip, we told the travel agent what had happened last time, that we had been given the wrong car, that we took full-size cases AND hand luggage, and so we needed to book the next size up. OK, no worries, it was all booked and sorted, the car would take our cases.

When we eventually got to the Alamo desk at MCO, the guy took one look at our luggage and said “Are they yours too?” (Noooooooo, my friend, we just picked up someone else’s random luggage to drag around the airport…Duh!) We replied that yes, they were ours. We didn’t look like we were emigrating or anything (you saw John's case in a previous post, mine was a similar size), just one case and one hand luggage item each. He looked at us like we were planning on loading a circus into a convertible.

“They won’t fit in this car, you’re going to need an upgrade. The one they’ve booked you is for hand luggage only.” SERIOUSLY?! Again?! We made it VERY clear that the car we were given last time wasn’t suitable when we were booking this trip, so either our travel agent majorly messed up, or Alamo are trying to scam foreign travellers who are unfamiliar with the makes/models of cars over there out of money at the airport. He point blank refused to even let us try to get our cases into the car we were allocated (I was sure we could have fitted them in if we dropped the back seats), the options he offered were:

Lose the money we’d already paid, and go to a different rental company.

Pay a “small fee” to upgrade the vehicle to one that would hold our luggage, and take up the issue with the TA when we got home, because it was their error not his.

Call a taxi.

This time there was zero pixie dust and a massive $354.88 bill to pay for the upgrade. The guy was REALLY off with us, refused to “waste time” showing us the car, complained that he had to deal with travel companies doing this all the time and it was a PITA, and generally was a total word-that-can’t-be-used-around-preschool-toys. I don’t know how much Alamo were paying this con-artist, but $354.88 was not a “small fee” to us! That was about ⅕ of our entire budget for the two weeks we were there, including money that we had to do some shopping for other people back home who sent us with requests for hard-to-find-in-the-UK items. Fortunately we could just about fit it onto a credit card that we had with us, but if we couldn’t have done that we would definitely have had to cancel some ADRs and change our plans. I was furious! But that was NOT how I wanted to start our magical trip and I already had a headache, so I filed the receipt away to worry about later when we got home.
[Since we returned home I have contacted the travel agent, and they HAD booked us the right car, our luggage would have fitted in it easily. They are currently chasing Alamo to get us our refund! We were lucky that we had room on a card for the extra expense, but losing that much cash would totally ruin some families' trips. We are NEVER using Alamo again!]

So, pockets lighter, cases feeling heavier by the second, we went to collect the car.

I couldn't believe the heat when we stepped out of the airport! So this is the humidity I've heard so much about! I see what you mean now. Wow! I was still feeling really bad so the heat didn't help at all. We decided that, instead of checking in and going straight back out again, we would check in and hang out in our room for a while in the hope that I would feel better after a nap. Soon we were on our way to the resort. I called home on the way to let them know that we had landed safely. They already knew! Dad had downloaded an app on his phone, and was tracking our flight on that, as well as on the computer. It took us almost 2hrs from landing to getting to the resort, so I’m glad they knew we landed safely at the time and weren’t waiting all that extra time to hear from me. They passed the message around the rest of the family too to save my phone bill!

I was so excited to finally get to stay on property. We parked up and headed into Corner House, where “Boris” explained that his real name was actually Anthony, but his room-mate had taken his badge so he had to wear his boss’ and now all the other staff were teasing him. He was lovely, and very helpful. We chatted about the parks, Halloween, favourite rides and shows, and he gave us the welcome info about the resort. Finally we got to the bit I’d been waiting for...Our Magic Bands!! We didn't get the cool Incredibles box, but never mind. Anthony/Boris set mine up first, and I decided to model it right away. Then he tried to set John’s up and it just wouldn’t work! He tried everything, but nope, no luck. Kudos to him for trying for so long, but by now my aching head was really wishing he would just give in and get us a new one! Fortunately John had chosen the grey MB anyway, so having a replacement grey one didn’t really matter, and we were allowed to keep the original as it was the one with his name printed inside. Magic Band #2 worked fine, thank goodness! As we were about to walk away Anthony/Boris said “”Wait a minute! I almost forgot, we have a package for you!” I got so excited thinking that it was some kind of gift or pixie dust treat, haha! Nope. I was so excited to be there that I had completely forgotten that I had ordered something online to be delivered to the resort. It was the shirt I ordered from Trixin Clothing! I’d been drooling over them for ages, but couldn’t face paying shipping/import duty to get it sent to me at home. Fortunately CBR played PO Box and I was able to collect it and stow it in my luggage! Sadly it was WAY too warm to wear it on our trip, but it shall keep me warm now that we are back home! With Magic Bands and mail collected, we were on our way to Jamaica!!

I originally requested Jamaica because of the pretty walk across the little island, and because it seemed the closest to Old Port Royale without actually taking up a room in the immediately adjacent islands, which I thought we didn’t need to do as much as the people with small children, elderly/disabled relatives, etc. Then...They closed the bridge. Hmm. I know we could have contacted Disney and tried to change our request, but honestly, we are both young, able-bodied and capable of walking, and I felt like we should leave the room swaps for the people who needed them more than we did. I’m so glad we did! It seemed there were way less people staying in Jamaica than the other islands, and our little corner of the resort was SO quiet, we only heard other people once during our whole stay.

The resort was STUNNING! We parked up in Jamaica and headed off to find room 4553. One thing I will say about CBR is to save enough energy at night to get back to your room! It felt like a maze to find our door, and the walk seemed so much longer after a full day in the parks! I knew what to expect from the rooms as I had been stalking the DISboards and TripAdvisor, but I was surprised how big it was in real life. I was a little sad that there weren’t any little hidden Mickey/character touches in our room, but it was spotlessly clean and well-maintained, so I wasn’t about to complain! For the brief amount of time we spent there (shower, sleep and shopping storage!) it was just perfect.

Here is a little video of our drive from the airport and a quick room tour. Yes, that is Kermit singing Kokomo. Sadly, what with the split, and the new TV show, Caribbean Kermit (who helped to plan our trip) was too busy to join us, but we wanted him to factor in there somewhere! Plus at least one person on the bus (usually me) would start singing/humming this song on the bus as they announced each island. The day it popped up on the steel band music loop on the bus I just about died!

Once we’d dropped the cases and bags and explored the room, I insisted on meeting Stacey! I was feeling worse, but everyone seemed to rave about the Stacey channel, so I had to put it and see what the hype was all about! Then John took over the remote so I settled down and had a nap, but when I woke up later I felt no better. I was sad that our first night was ruined and that I felt so bad, and we headed to Old Port Royale to cancel our reservation at Planet Hollywood and so that John could get something to eat. It did mean that we fell foul of the $10/pp cancellation fee, but I knew that I couldn’t have eaten anything (I actually tried a few of John’s fries that I managed to keep down until we got back to our room before they made their untimely exit).

I did, of course, manage to snap a couple of pictures on the way to OPR.

How does somewhere this perfect exist?! So beautiful.

No-one wants to start their trip to Disney throwing up...This was not going well at all! I was tired and sad and felt terrible. I couldn’t really hear properly because of my sinuses/ears, but the air-con unit was somehow still SO LOUD to me that it was making me feel even worse.

We had a breakfast reservation the next morning, and a MNSSHP and Hallowishes dessert party in the evening, so we went to bed early in the hopes that tomorrow would be a better day.

It had to be...we were finally in DISNEY!!!

WDW Trip Report 2015 Monday: The One With All The Flying

Monday: The One With All The Flying

There are only three acceptable reasons to be waking me up at 6am.

1) Air travel.
2) It's snowing.
3) Death. Either my own imminent one, or that of someone important.

Fortunately, in this case it was reason #1. Woohoo!!

There was too-early-in-the-morning bumbling about, getting ready and dressed, doing of make-up (me) and re-packing of cases (John) and all that other non-Disney stuff that no-one is really interested in.

Trundling off to start our long journey. This time tomorrow we will be in Walt Disney World!

I am bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in the morning. He is not!

We got a free shuttle mini-bus (mini-motor-coach?!) from the hotel to the airport, checked in our luggage, and headed for Duty Free shopping, where we bought a travel adaptor, having lost yet another one somewhere in our house after our last trip. Where do they all go?! I don't know. We seem to buy one every trip, I do know that. At this point we should have studied the packaging a bit more closely, as the adaptor we bought had a night light which was not only a bright neon green light, but also could not be switched off. Cue anxious nights falling asleep worrying that whatever we had used to cover the glaring light that night would catch on fire. Fortunately towards the end of the trip the bulb in the nightlight started to die so it wasn't on all the time. Unfortunately it was on intermittently, at its own choosing, so we had the choice of covering the light and fearing a fiery death, or leaving the light uncovered, knowing that at any minute we could be awoken by neon green rave lighting flashing away by the bed. Decisions, decisions!!

In an attempt to make our early morning airport excursion as easy as possible, I had booked the Fast-Track security service, and also booked us into the Escape Lounge. The Fast-Track was definitely worth it, at £3.50/person. If we hadn’t needed it I wouldn’t be bothered about wasting so little money, and if the queues had been massive, it would have saved us a LOT of time. As it was we used it, but it didn’t really make too much difference as we wouldn’t have waited that long anyway.

Personally, I don't think the Escape Lounge was worth £18.99/person. If you drink alcohol at 7am in the morning, then you would get your money's worth (and should probably also wonder about getting help for that breakfast drinking if it's a regular thing! ;) ) as it's a free bar for beer, wine, etc, but for us, we just had bacon and sausage sandwiches (which weren't that nice), apple juice that tasted like it had been watered down, and two small (glass bottle) Cokes. The staff weren't that nice either, everything seemed to be too much trouble and, with the exception of the guy checking people in at reception, I don't think I saw anyone else crack a smile! Next time I will save the money and we will just go to Starbucks instead! So much for our lovely VIP travel experience. I was NOT impressed.

"Hey, look. 'Esc-a-pay'. I wonder what that means? That's funny, it's spelled just like the word 'escape.'"

Behold! A very tired man modelling the most expensive breakfast sandwich in the world!!!!

We took a wander around the airport, did a little more browsing, and then set off for our gate.

Lovely weather, we were so sad to leave it behind...NOT!

I really enjoy flying. I love take off, I love landing, I even love the weird little bento-box-esque tiny portioned food, even though usually it's gross. What I absolutely cannot stand is the waiting to fly. That's when the thoughts of my possible demise in tin can of flames plummeting towards a shark-infested ocean creep up on me. I'm an excellent flyer...but I'm an incredibly panicky waiting-to-flyer. Fortunately there were no delays, and we were soon loaded onto the plane and settled in our seats.

We paid the £4 to upgrade to the Premier entertainment package, and I watched random episodes of The Middle, The Big Bang Theory, and Friends before settling down to watch "Spy", "Inside Out", and "Jersey Boys". I was a little disappointed that there were no really new films on there, previously we've had films we've never seen before at all, but it was nice to watch a couple of favourites, and to see Spy as we missed it in cinemas.

During the flight, I started to feel really sinus-y and like a really bad headache was imminent. I took painkillers, tried to sleep, and used the forehead menthol stick I'd packed, but nothing seemed to help much. The landing was SO painful! I thought my ears would explode. But at least we were on the ground.

We made it through security relatively quickly, even though my picture is AWFUL because I laughed at the little machine squatting down so far to take my photograph because I’m only 5’2”, and then tried to stop laughing because it's an official government thing and usually you're not allowed to smile...So I'm just pulling a horrible face. Fortunately though the guard was really friendly and we got through pretty fast. For some reason, my case is always one of the last ones off the plane. I have no idea why! There were much larger/heavier-looking cases than mine that came off way sooner, along with all the pushchairs, golf clubs, car seats, etc. John Daly was on our flight too, with his partner, they were WAY more careful with his clubs than everyone else’s, I noticed! I was also really disappointed (a week after we landed at home!) when John corrected me that it was John Daly the golfer, who was on our flight, and not John (F) Daley, Dr. Lance Sweets from “Bones”. Boo! That’s nowhere near as exciting!

I’d heard tell of the mysterious Fake-o-Rail, now I got to ride it! Last time we flew into Stanford, no fancy transport there. John and I have a thing where, whenever we’re heading to the Monorail, we quote the monorail song from “The Simpsons”. Not all of it, just the bit that repeats “Monorail!!” getting higher and higher until we run out of notes. Yup, we’re annoying. It changed nicely for “Fake-o-Railllllll!!” though, much to the confusion of all but one of our fellow passengers. High-five, fellow Simpsons fan!

As we trundled off to the main airport building on the Fake-o-Rail, John pointed out that a woman next to me was about to lose one of her out of control cases right into my foot as she played around with her phone. I may or may not have verbally encouraged her to pay attention to the job in hand rather than her FB account, and keep her luggage under control. Yup, I yelled at John Daly’s wife on the Fake-o-Rail. Whoops! Maybe next time she will not try to mow down random people with her luggage!

WDW Trip Report 2015: Sunday: The One In Which Our Trip Begins!

Sunday: The One In Which Our Trip Begins!

John and I both had the weekend off before our trip, so we had LOTS of time to be super-organised, get our packing done nice and early, and spend a relaxing weekend packing sedately, visiting with family and friends, go to a hockey game in the evening on Sunday, and then my Dad would drive us to the airport to check in at the hotel. Which, of course, if you know us at all, you will know was never going to happen. Our house felt like every available surface was covered in clean laundry, the dryer was still running, my plans to leave a nice tidy house to come back to went completely awry, the fabric paint on John's costume was still drying and I spent the day in a panic, packing, re-packing and checking my multiple lists in between visiting my parents and grandparents.

Eventually (late) we set off for the game, where I re-wrote numerous packing lists on my phone and largely did not pay attention at all. Then we grabbed take-out on the way home, I can't even remember what we ate, McDonald’s I think, stuffed last minute items into the cases, and before we knew it, Dad was calling to let us know he was setting off to pick us up.

We had a nice clear route to Manchester with no traffic, and soon we were wrestling our luggage through the revolving door at the Hilton. Normally I would be quite excited to stay at a Hilton (Premier Inn is more my level for one-off nights, as cheap as I can get away with whilst still being liveable!), but now the only hotel I wanted to be checking into was a DISNEY ONE!! But I feigned interest (OK, I was still pretty excited, it was all part of the trip after all) and took some photographs of our room.

*yawn*...Where are the Mickey ears?!

It really was that dark in there. Why do hotels object so to their guests being able to see?

The sooner we fall asleep, the sooner we go to DISNEY!!! How exciting!!!!!

£2.50 a bottle and they can't spell their own name correctly? Come on HilTon, up your game! ;)

After a trip to the bar, because I always forget how gross hotel tap water tastes until I am in a room with no bottled water, I had my Hildon water at a princely £2.50/bottle and we settled down to watch some TV and get to sleep fairly early. 6am wake-up call in the morning!!

We're Baaaack! With a Disney World Trip Report!

It's OK, I'm not dead. I just got busy. For, like, eight months. Whoops! Sorry about that...

For those of you who don't know, we recently took a trip to WALT DISNEY WORLD (sadly not for all of those eight months, just two weeks)!!

As I post my trip report over on the DISboards, I will also share the posts here. :) It's going to get really, REALLY Disney over here for a while, so if that's not your thing, maybe give me a miss. But hey, you're used to that after eight months of no updates. :)

I will try to translate the Disney shorthand as we go along. If I miss something, just ask!

Here goes...

The One With All The Plans

On our last trip, we pretty much just muddled along with no Fast Passes (FPs), Advanced Dining Reservations (ADR) or real plans. We stayed off-property and only made one reservation, for Cinderella's Royal Table (CRT). I made sketchy plans before we left and promptly left them at home in my hurry to pack. We had a fabulous time regardless!

This time, however, we were WAY more organised! Like, multiple spreadsheets organised. We also had a great deal which included 14 day park-hopper tickets for the price of 7 days, free Quick-Service Dining Plan, and a $100 gift card. We hired a car as we planned to also visit Tampa to see an NHL game, and go to the beach, as well as shopping trips to the discount outlets, etc. We saved for three years for our trip and it was the first time we would be staying on property (and only my second visit to WDW) so we wanted to do it properly!

Welcome, DISBoarders!

I recently started linking my Disney trip report posts to the DISBoards, so I would just like to say "Welcome!" to all the DISBoarders visiting my blog these days!

This DISBoard is an awesome community covering all (and I mean ALL) things Disney World. To be honest, it scares me slightly because it is SO big and full of threads and info, I get pretty lost on there. But, it is The go-to source for "real people" reviews, tips, and information on Disney World.

Welcome!

19-04 - EPCOT

Thursday got off to rather a tentative start, mainly whilst I slowly expanded my limits to see quite how far my recovery had progressed during the night. Turns out, I was pretty much back to normal! :)

However, we decided that the first stop should be CVS Pharmacy for a sun hat (stetson, but of course), non-shimmery sunblock for John, and stronger sunblock for me as the shimmery stuff (thanks Mum! :D) was only factor 20. Having been successfully slathered in sunblock and newly hatted, we set off for Epcot.

Enjoy the blue sky, folks...It doesn't last long!!

Spaceship Earth A.K.A. The Giant Golfball.
Again, I had underestimated how big EPCOT actually was. We decided to attack World Showcase on our first visit, as there were fewer rides and more sedate wandering, which was less likely to lead to any repeats of The Gatorade Incident, which I definitely didn't want.

EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow, if you prefer), like almost everything else, is built around a lake. The side closest to the entrance is Future World, which includes Spaceship Earth. I always thought those blocks standing up around the bottom of SE were just lights or something. They're not. They are all covered in pictures of people, which is pretty awesome! I want my picture on there though.

We were lucky that our holiday coincided with the EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival.
The displays were just incredible. I think we saw most of them, though I don't think we have photographs of them all because of the weather. There were loads of topiaries of Disney characters, and then other areas that were just beautifully planted.

We walked past Spaceship Earth and through the Innoventions Area to get to World Showcase. Test Track was closed whilst we were there, for a refit, but Disney had put on entertainment outside the building, with the guys below making regular appearances to sing, and explain what the improvements were.

They also brought a sweet ride with them!

Spaceship Earth from the Innoventions Area.

Peter Pan, Cpt Hook and Crocodile!

We decided to wander to World Showcase through Tinkerbell's Fairy Garden. I adored the fairy garden, the tiny little houses were so intricate and the fairies were really well done. There was also a brass-rubbing "game" for the kids, where they could collect a sheet and a crayon and get pictures of all the fairies from their plaques. I've just guessed at the fairies' names from what I can remember/find on google, so if they're wrong please tell me!

Silvermist.

Fawn.

Tink!
Periwinkle.

Terance the Dust Fairy...Don't we all have a few of these?!
Irridessa.

Rosetta.

Vidia.

Hanging out in the fairy garden.

A sign of things to come! :S

Flowers in the World Showcase Lake.

Mickey and Minnie! Going a bit American Gothic there, Mickey!

Donald and Daisy.

World Showcase! And some pretty forboding clouds. :S

We entered World Showcase on the Mexico side. World Showcase is based around 11 countries (Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, "The American Adventure", Morocco, Japan, France, United Kingdom, and Canada). Each country's area features a film about the country, and a few shops selling local produce. A few have rides, and some have shows. All of the countries are only staffed by people from that country, which is really great as they can answer any questions you might have, and you get to hear a little of the native language as well.

So, we started off in Mexico.

The Mexico Pavillion is based on a real Aztec Temple of Quetzalcoatl at Teotihuacan (yes, I did Google that, I couldn't remember!). Inside the temple is an exhibition all about the beautiful Oaxacan wood carvings, which are the ones painted with dot-work a little like Aboriginal style, but way more detailed (and I think prettier). In the heart of the temple is a little Mexican marketplace, which sells sombreros, sugar skulls, jewellery, and pottery painted in the Oaxacan style. I couldn't afford a carving, so I bought a little pottery rabbit instead, which fortunately survived the journey home! there is also a restaurant in there, and the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Cabelleros. You travel around in a little boat, whilst Donald and Cabellero Two and Three (did they have names? I don't know) travel around Mexico in a mix of anamatronics and film. When we got off the ride, there was a band performing.

That was the only picture I got in the Mexico Pavillion because it was a sort of twilight setting, with little stars, etc.

Photopass!

The next stop on the world walking tour is Norway.
Inside the little Scandinavian village there is a small exhibit about the Vikings, the usual shops selling food, clothes and perfume, and a ride, Maelstrom. You travel back in time aboard a Viking ship, and see Norway's history (with the addition of a few trolls) progress. I really liked Maelstrom, even if there was a few mini log-flume type drops in there (one of which you go down backwards!!!!). I was beginning to learn that I'm not keen on travelling around in the dark. I like to know what's coming. Travelling backwards in the dark? *meep*

This guy watches over the gift shop!

Italy across the lake, with more grumbly clouds.

The China Pavillion was next, and it was so beautiful. Going from one country to the next you really do get the sense of being in a different place, even though you just walk down the street. The trees and plants change, the music and sounds change, and of course the style of all the buildings change. The China buildings were amazing.

When I think about these topiaries, in my head they are moving...but looking at the photograph again I'm guessing that is just something I've made up later as they were actually real planted topiaries!!

Cute concession stand.
Reflections of China. The Chinese film is a 360-degree film, in a circular theatre. I've never seen anything like that before, it was great, and had some gorgeous film of China.

Fu Dogs outside the gift shop.
The stunning ceiling in the "Temple of Heaven" waiting area for Reflections of China. Seriously, this was the effort in the WAITING AREA. Amazingly beautiful. If you only click for the large version of one photograph, make it this one!!

Scale models of the Xi'an terracotta warriors in The House Of The Whispering Willows gallery. They also had some pieces from the Schloss collection.

It was starting to spit with rain as we left China, headed for Germany, and the sky definitely wasn't having a magical day! :S

Along the way there was this lovely Haiti garden, to raise money for farmers, etc in Haiti.

Look who was waiting to welcome us to Germany! There was one hell of a queue (no change there then!), so we didn't stick around to say hello, but I managed to get a snap of her between kids.

The Karamell KĂ¼che. They sold just about everything you could imagine baked, made or trimmed up with Werther's Original. We tried the scrumptious caramel-filled cookies.

I love the tissue print too. :D

It was whilst we were sat outside Oktoberfest enjoying our cookies that it started to rain. And I mean RAIN. Literally it was bouncing down, with full-on thunder and lightning. We hid in the gift shop for a while, watching people ramming their kids into ponchos in a mad panic, but in the end we gave up and braved the rain.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves topiaries.
'Scuse the finger in shot, I was sheltering my lens from the rain!

Next up was Italy, with a special Venice area.
Italy.

Venice, looking almost as wet as the real thing!

We didn't really spend that long in Italy. The rain was bouncing (as you can see around the gondola in "Venice"), and we were getting hungry again, so we had a quick look around the shops (Italy is mainly shops, though there is a little glass-blower type place as well I think) and headed on to America.

The America pavillion did make me laugh. All of the other countries were just "Italy", "China", "Mexico". America is "The American Adventure". It's no different to any of the other pavillions, no major rides, etc, so why it deserves a special title is beyond me. John reckoned it was because we were already in America, so they had to make it a bit different.

When we walked in there was a doorman hurrying people into the Liberty Inn restaurant, so in we went! I left John in the queue and went to grab a table.

Yup, we got WET that day. Within about 15mins of it stopping we were perfectly dry though!
Whilst I was waiting for John to arrive with lunch, the dinner show started! We hadn't realised, but they have a regular "show" at Liberty Inn, with minute men and flag-bearers playing their instruments and marching between the tables of bemused diners.

The food here was great. We only had regular cheeseburger and fries, but they were delicious!

The actual "American Adventure" is an anamatronic show, which is staged in a huge Colonial-style building. I didn't actually get a photograph of the outside of the building. We got inside just in time to hear the end of the Voices of Liberty Singers performing in the waiting area.

From the waiting area, you travel up escalators through the Hall of Flags to the main theatre.

You weren't allowed to take photos inside the theatre, so I don't have any more. The actual show was really really good. The anamatronics were amazing, one even walked upstairs, though the story left a little to be desired. According to The American Adventure, the Pilgrims arrived at America...And no-one was there! It did give me great concerns about the standard of education in US history departments!

Outside the theatre there were more topiaries.

Lotso!
Woody and Buzz!

Blue sky!!!

On to Japan! I had been looking forward to Japan since before we got on the plane for one thing: Pick a Pearl. You got to choose an oyster, they crack it open in a ceremony, and you get to keep the pearl that comes out of it.

Because nothing says "Japan" like a Nascar car and a redneck tow-truck...

Ka-chow!!!! Lightning McQueen.

Tow-Mater.

Waiting to pick my pearl in the Japan pavillion.

The Pearl Picking Ceremony begins.

Measuring my pearl.

Banging the drum.

My pearl! :D I had it set in a little pendant. You can choose all kinds of settings, starting at around $15 and going right up to ones with diamonds, etc, in them.

The Japan pavillion also had a really interesting exhibit about Japanese art, showing how the traditional Japanese myths and legends had been transformed and re-told in the stories today, like Anime and cartoons.

I love this little guy! He's Moon Rabbit, stamping out rice cakes on the moon...

The drummers were playing as we left the pavillion.

Pretty pool of GIANT koi carp.

Bonsai garden.

Next up...Morocco!

By the time we hit Morocco, things were starting to dry out again. This rain shower was  a first for me, a downpour of warm rain, and then 15mins later everything was more or less dry!

Hot, sunny Morocco!

The mosaic work in Morocco pavillion was gorgeous, so detailed, it was beautiful.

Stunning fountain.

So much detailed carving.

Street market.

Queuing in France...and I am très excited, because...

It's MARIE!!!!!!!!!!

I LOVE Marie. The Aristocats is my favourite Disney film, probably ever, and Marie is my favourite character (along with Thumper, of course).

Beauty and The Beast in the France Pavillion.

Beautiful hedge maze garden, with France pavillion in the background.

Cogsworth and Lumiere.

Mrs Potts!

Sleeping Beauty.
Cinderella.

Winnie The Pooh!

Over the bridge, with the Eiffel Tower in the background!
Welcome to England! The United Kingdom pavillion is too cute (though I don't see much of Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland in it)...It has a pub, little shops, and it's all in olde-English style. The street contains one building for each century of British history. When we walked through the turnstile when we arrived the greeter asked where we were from, and made a point of telling us about the "Yorkshire County Fish and Chips" in English pavillion!!

The miniature Hampton Court Palace.
I don't have many pictures of the next pavillion, which is surprising as it was Canada!
By that time we were exhausted, so we decided to sit and watch Off Kilter, the awesome band who play in the Canada pavillion. I'd seen a video of them on the DisneyGo blog, and I really wanted to see their show.
Whilst I was waiting, John headed back to Japan to pick up my pearl pendant. I was just glad that I didn't have to make that walk again!!

That pretty much ended our day at Epcot. The park closes pretty early at 9pm, and it was about 7:30pm when Off Kilter started. When their set finished and John was back, we sat around by the staging area, and waited for the fireworks to start.

That extra walk to Japan and back was the final straw!!!
The EPCOT firework display is a show called IllumiNations: Reflections Of Earth. It's a 3 act show (they all run together, I mean there are three different "themes"), from the creation of Earth through to the present day. A huge illuminated globe floats into the centre of the lake, and plays videos from all around the world, as well as changing colour, etc. There is also music, fire, lasers, water fountains and fireworks. Most of my photos didn't come out that well, but I got a few! One of my favourite parts of the show is at the start, torches are lit around the lake, and instead of the usual dimming the lights announcement, you hear the sound of someone blowing out a candle, and the torches and all the other lights go out/dim. SO cool.

After the display we joined the long queue out of the park. It didn't actually take that long, but we were both in walked-too-far-already agony, so it felt like forever!
Spaceship Earth. :)
